UN OCHA: Flash Updates – Escalation of Hostilities August 2022

On this page is a collection of updates from The United Nations OCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs), covering the period of escalated hostilities in Gaza in August 2022. 

A brief summary of key events as reported by the OCHA:

  • Israeli authorities kept border crossings closed, citing security concerns from 2 August
  • Israeli airstrikes on multiple locations in Gaza, including Gaza City on 5 August
  • Gaza powerplant shuts down due to lack of fuel entering Gaza, noon 6 August, with rolling blackouts exceeding 20 hours a day
  • People and medical cases unable to exit Gaza, with essential commodities such as fuel, food unable to enter
  • Blackout affects already chronically overstretched hospitals, health care, clean water and hygiene infrastructure
  • Ceasefire brokered by Egypt and the UN came into effect 7 August at 23.30
  • OCHA confirmed total of 46 Palestinian casualties, including 16 children
  • MoH reports 360 Palestinians injured, including upwards of 151 children, 58 women and 19 elderly
  • 1,761 housing units damaged, leaving 450 Palestinians internally displaced
