Your Will is an important way of looking after the future of all the people you care most about. After you've taken care of your loved ones, you may also wish to leave a gift in your Will to support causes you believe in.

• Residuary gifts – a gift of all or a percentage of the remainder of your estate, after debts have been paid, and other gifts made.
• Pecuniary gifts – a fixed sum of money.
• Specific gifts – a particular named item such as jewellery or paintings.
• Contingent gifts – a legacy made on the basis of another event happening first. For example your Will could state that a gift only applies if all other beneficiaries named in your Will die before you do.
• Life interest – this is a gift which someone can benefit from in their lifetime. For instance, your house could be left for the use of a relative.

Treasurer or any other proper officer of Welfare Association for the time being shall be sufficient discharge to my executors.

For a specific sum:
I give to Welfare Association of 6 Cambridge Court, 210 Shepherds Bush Road, London, W6 7NJ, Registered Charity Number 1020238, absolutely, the sum (amount in figures, amount in words) to be applied by Welfare Association for its charitable purposes, and I further direct that the receipt of the Hon. Treasurer or any other proper officer of Welfare Association for the time being shall be sufficient discharge to my executors.

For a specific item:
I give to Welfare Association of 6 Cambridge Court, 210 Shepherds Bush Road, London, W6 7NJ, Registered Charity Number 1020238, absolutely, (write in here whatever you wish to give) to be applied by Welfare Association for its charitable purposes, and I further direct that the receipt of the Hon. If you would like to add a donation to Welfare Association to an existing Will, you can use a Codicil.

If you already have a will, the simplest way to make alterations is by making a Codicil. This is an addition or change to a will. Every time you want to update your will you can prepare a Codicil and you can have as many of these as you like.

Adding a Codicil to your Will means there is no need to change the terms of your current Will. It simply adds a new instruction. However you will need to make sure that your Codicil is legally binding (a solicitor will do this for you) and that it is kept with your will.

Most gifts made during your lifetime are tax-free, as long as you make them at least seven years before your death. If you don't, inheritance tax will be taken from all that you own above the current threshold amount. A gift to a registered charity, however, is always free from inheritance tax. So a legacy to a charity such as Welfare Association would effectively reduce any tax you have to pay.

Yes you can, but the work that most needs our support changes over time. So, your gift is much more flexible and effective if you specify that it can be used where the need is greatest.
