Providing young children with screening services, prescription glasses and treatment to protect their eye sight.
Addressing sight disabilities/difficulties for children in Kindergartens & Schools in Gazais an early detection and care intervention for young children in Gaza.
The absence of a comprehensive screening programme in Gaza makes children (0-5 years of age) more vulnerable to sight and hearing problems. Sight and hearing difficulties and disabilities that go undetected can affect a child’s academic attainment and cause difficulties with reading and writing and lead to psychological issues, resulting in emotional and behavioural issues. The early care and treatment of children born with sight and hearing disabilities is important to maximise health and development, mobility, language acquisition and improvement of sensory skills.
In this latest project, we are planning to screen approx. 1500 children in 10 schools in Gaza including Kindergartens, special education centres, and public schools, who will receive sight examinations. Based on the results of the examinations, children will receive the correct prescription glasses they require. If the child requires medical treatment, e.g. for an eye infection, the ophthalmologist will write the prescription for the necessary medications which will then be provided through the project. (In case more complex services are required, the child will be referred to a specialised hospital for follow-up and treatment.) Approx cost of each eye test is £1, cost of new prescription glasses is £12.
