Supporting families who were badly affected by Storm Alexa in Gaza

On 11 December 2013 a devastating winter storm (Storm Alexa) hit Gaza causing widespread damage and severe flooding. Thousands of people were evacuated and displaced from their homes as a result and moved to temporary shelters and relatives’ homes. Prior to the storm, the sewage and infrastructure in Gaza was already overstretched as the main power plant  shut down a month earlier, leaving families in Gaza without any power for up to 12-16 hours a day and hospitals at risk of power outages.

Our emergency programme provided urgent support to the families that were badly affected by the severe flooding. Priority was given to the poorest families with damage to their homes and loss of belongings, and especially those with children enrolled in school.

In total we supported 1368 displaced families in Beit Lahia, north of Gaza Strip.  We provided:

  • Food parcels which included items such as rice, pasta, cheese, canned meat etc.
  • Children’s clothes packages which included t-shirts, jeans, underwear, shoes and pyjamas and the children were able to select the correct sized clothes they needed
  • School bags for children containing pens, pencils, books and  stationery so they can return to school properly equipped
  • Rechargeable lighting sets so homes are not in darkness during power cuts and families not at risk from using candles

“It was a real nightmare. The floods damaged our home and all of our property was ruined with the dirty water and overflowing sewage that came in. We were evacuated from our home late at night when rescue teams managed to reach us. We stayed in a shelter for five days before returning home. Walls are badly damaged as is all of our furniture, clothes and kitchenware.”

“Your support has brought us hope and happiness. My girls received new winter clothes, much better than their old clothes. They are also happy to go back to  school with the new school bags and stationery. Thank you for your kind hearts.”
