WAUK Newsletter 12/12/2014

It has been another difficult year for Palestinian communities in Palestine and in the refugee camps and gatherings in Lebanon. Welfare Association has been responding to multiple emergencies throughout 2014 including severe flooding in Gaza, ongoing Syria crisis and the devastating conflict in Gaza in the summer. We would like to thank all of our supporters for their continued support throughout this year in donating to these appeals which have allowed us to respond to these emergencies quickly and effectively.

Our new Annual Review 2013-14 has been printed and sent out his week which provides a summary of our work and achievements. It is also available on our website. Click here to view.

1. Summary of WA response to Gaza Conflict

Surgeons at Makassed Hospital.pngIn July we were able to support surgeries at the Makassed hospital for patients referred from Gaza for surgeries which could not be completed in Gaza and prioritising children and youths badly injured. More than 70 badly injured children were supported with this grant.

At the same time, we were in the middle of a major Ramadan emergency food pack distribution to some of the poorest families in Gaza and by 16 July our WA Gaza teams had already provided more than 3000 food packs. Our teams worked in very difficult conditions and throughout the continuing bombardment of Gaza by Israel. In total 4,535 parcels were distributed to 3,512 families in need.

Several new emergency response projects then began in succession including providing support to key health services (in form of medical supplies and disposables) as well as supporting fishermen’s families with emergency food packs. Read more on our emergency response

Thank you to all supporters who contributed to our emergency appeal – through this we were able to support an additional 1,300 badly affected families, totalling 3095 families who also received home/shelter light sets, winter clothes for their children and blankets. Especially important now as winter begins and temperatures drop.

2. Urgent Winter Appeal

Gaza Appeal resized 2.pngWith the level of destruction that has occurred following the 50 day military strikes on Gaza and restrictions limiting the entry of construction materials into Gaza, there are estimates it could take up to 50 years to rebuild and restore Gaza. More than 2,200 people were killed and as a result of over 20,000 homes being destroyed, there are more than 100,000 people are homeless.

Welfare Association is continuing to provide essential repairs to roofs, windows, doors, and plumbing of family homes that were moderately damaged to enable these families to return home as soon as possible. To provide urgent support to these families during these difficult winter months we have launched an urgent winter appeal. Welfare Association will be providing emergency food and blanket packs, and winter clothing packs for children to families with no source of income and who have lost everything.
