Projects in 2002 / 2003

West Bank and Gaza
1. Gaza Children’s Club, Deit al Balah, (Middle Gaza region) This benefits more than 100 children in desperate need of a central club, funds covered furniture, allowances for teachers, animators, trainers of various activities such as: music and folkloric dancing, handicrafts, theatre, computer lab, painting, also lessons in English language skills. These activities supplement school based learning and provide a release from the strain of the daily psychological pressure of living in this high conflict zone.

2. Gaza Community Based Rehabilitation Programme The project is targeting children and adults disabled in the recent conflict it is co-financed with the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. A holistic programme beginning with home visits, medical checks and physical therapy is closely followed by home adaptations to return the individual’s independence and then trying to get them back to school or work. Also incorporates family counseling to enable the family to adapt and cope with the needs of the disabled family member.

3. Tree Replanting Programme More than 4,000,000 m² of cultivated Palestinian land has been destroyed since the outbreak of the current conflict, in late September 2000. These fruit bearing trees, an integral part of the Palestinian landscape, have provided livelihoods for local families for generations. In addition, throughout this turbulent period, unemployment has soared to a current high of 75% as the population is under siege and not allowed to pass through checkpoints to get to work. Food supplies have also been severely disrupted and are in short supply. The World Bank has stated that 70% of Palestinians in Gaza and 50% in the West Bank now live in poverty (defined as less than US $2 per day, person) and the U.N. has stated that 62% of the Palestinian population is currently at risk.

This reforestation project aims to restore agricultural produce-generated incomes and important sources of nutrition, it will also increase self-reliance by providing job opportunities for young Palestinians. This project is initially focussed on replanting severely damaged orchards in Bethlehem, Nablus, Ramallah and the Gaza Strip.

Results by June 2002

WA is establishing a small operating theatre, a physical therapy room, and a mini pharmacy for Al Razi hospital in order to provide much needed medical care for the injured at Al Nuseirat Refugee camp.

4.2 AROURA Charitable society West Bank Funds are allocated to support the development of the Kindergarten for the society as part of the school playground was destroyed.

Lebanon
1. Dalal and Future Kids Kindergartens provide early childhood education to girls and boys aged 3-5 years in the Palestinian refugee camps of Shatilla and Bourj El-Barajneh, in Beirut. Future Child KG has 100 children in four classes and Dalal KG has 125 children in 5 classes. Without these classes there is no pre-school education available for all of these children.

2. ‘Creation of a Social Model Toward Inclusion of Disabled Palestinian Refugee Children in Primary Schools in Camps in Lebanon’ (Planned for June 03 – June 06.) This project aims to include disabled Palestinian children in primary school education in the refugee camps in Lebanon

Three new programmes are planned for 2003 in Lebanon:

3. Vocational Training – offering programmes to all the refugee camps in areas where vacancies do exist and with relevant qualifications graduates of these courses will have real possibilities of bringing an income to their families.

4. Pre-School Education, those completing pre-school and learning basic skills continue on to primary school, otherwise they begin primary school without the skills of most of their peers, gradually lose their confidence, drop out of the education system with no hope of securing future work.

5. Improving Services for the Disabled - in the refugee camps. Including physical therapy, family counselling, home adaptations and community awareness raising and capacity building training for local NGOs serving this sector, this programme is urgently needed.
