Cycle4GazaCycle4Gaza Fundraising Challenge 2010:

Cycling 4 Gaza is an initiative founded by a very dynamic group of dedicated young professionals in the wake of last year’s war on Gaza.

Their aim is to raise worldwide awareness about the ongoing suffering in Gaza and at the same time fundraise for Palestinian NGOs in the education and health sectors in Gaza.

In July 2009, 27 cyclists went from London to Paris, over 3 days and raised over GBP £90,000 for UK Charity MAP.  The concept is that each year they will cross a different country en route to Gaza – ending up finally in Gaza!

This year the Cycling 4 Gaza team are fundraising for Welfare Association’ Early Childhood Development projects in Gaza:

Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children

Atfaluna supports thousands of deaf children and their families through deaf education, audiology, speech therapy, income generating programs for the deaf, vocational training, parents', teachers’ and community training and awareness programs, and a host of other services and programmes.

Gaza Community Mental Health Programme

Providing psychosocial support services to traumatised children in Gaza. Helping children overcome their trauma and cope with the daily stresses and restrictions of life in Gaza

Kanafani kindergartens

Run by the Ghassan Kanafani Development Association, these kindergartens understand the importance of the development of children in their formative years. They aim to:

- Provide Palestinian children with an environment that respects their rights

- Establish kindergartens to respond to child cultural, social and psychological needs

Supporting Children with Special Needs in the Refugee Camps in Lebanon

If not addressed early, language disorders can develop into life-long impediments, as well as create and/or exacerbate learning disabilities. Kindergarten and first-grade teachers play a key role in ensuring that children acquire the preliminary skills needed for reading and writing. WA is working to build the capacities of teachers in the early detection of learning disorders, and enabling them to intervene to addressing of minor difficulties and prevent them developing into potential disorders.

This project will upgrade the skills of 15 first-grade teachers from six different schools, 10 Elementary School Counsellors and 13 KG teachers from six KGs in the Palestinian refugee camps in South Lebanon. These counsellors and teachers work with 800 young children who will benefit from this project this year.

Gaza Emergency Appeal 2010: Nutrition Programme for Kindergarten Children

The number of children under five years of age suffering from acute malnutrition in Gaza almost doubled between 2006 and 2008 from 1.4 to 2.4% (UNICEF). The World Health Organisation (WHO) also noted rising indicators for stunting, wasting, low body weight and anaemia among children and pregnant women
.
The ongoing blockade of Gaza has limited the availability of healthy foods and fresh fruit and vegetables on the local market and children’s health has further suffered.

With initial grants and donations of £45,000 this project will work through Kindergartens and provide young children with a nutritious meal each day. The meals will be prepared by local women's NGOs in Gaza.

As additional funds become available throughout 2010 this project will be expanded to include more KGs in Gaza.
