Detention On average approximately 30 children are held in administrative detention each year. Many are abducted from their homes during the night, such was the case with two young girls in Bethlehem in June, 2008 (see Addameer report below). In practice, Palestinians under administrative detention orders can be detained for months, if not years, without ever being informed about the reasons or length of their detention; and detainees are routinely informed of the extension of their detention on the day that the former order expires. This latter practice causes severe emotional trauma. Welfare Association has helped support the UK visit of two lawyers from Defence for Children International to meet with legal organizations, government and trade union representatives in November 2008.
