In Memory of Mr Abdel Mohsin Al-Qattan (1929 – 2017)

It is with huge sadness that the staff and Board of Welfare Association UK, report that our founder and key supporter Mr Abdel Mohsin Al-Qattan, passed away on the morning of 4th December 2017.

Mr. Abdel Mohsin Al-Qattan was born in Jaffa in 1929. In 1947, he joined the American University of Beirut as a student of political science. After graduating in 1951, he worked as a teacher first in Amman then in Kuwait. Two years later, he joined the Ministry of Water and Electricity where he eventually became Director General. In 1963, he left the public sector and co-founded Al-Hani Construction and Trading. The company soon became one of the most successful engineering and contracting companies in the Gulf.

From the early 1970s, Mr Al-Qattan was very actively involved in social, charitable and developmental work. He was one of the founders of the Institute for Palestine Studies and Welfare Association, he served as Palestine’s governor at the Arab Fund for Social and Economic Development, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Beirut.

In 1993, he launched the A.M. Qattan Foundation in London, by 1998 it was fully operational in Palestine with a range of cultural and educational programmes. In 1993, Mr Al-Qattan also worked to launch the Welfare Association UK, as a charity in England and Wales. In May 1999, Mr Al-Qattan returned to Palestine for the first time since 1948, visiting his hometown Jaffa, and accepted an honorary doctorate from Birzeit University.

WA-UK has always been generously supported and advised by Mr Al-Qattan, a lifelong philanthropist, who also hosted our offices in London at the Qattan Foundation for the last 16 years. Mr Al-Qattan was always the first to support our emergency appeals and fundraising events for children in Gaza, and in the Camps and Gatherings in Lebanon, and was always ready to support our development projects in Palestine and Lebanon.

Mr. Al-Qattan was a great champion of WA-UK, an extraordinarily generous philanthropist, and a very wise elder of the Palestinian community. He was truly one of the greats and will be hugely missed by all of us at Welfare Association and by anyone who knew him.

We send our sincere condolences to Mr Al-Qattan’s Family.
