Christmas Appeal: Jal El Baher 2011-12

Homes in Jal El Baher are constructed from makeshift concrete blocks, metal poles, and
corrugated metal sheet roofing, very susceptible to extreme summer heat and winter cold.
During winter months stormy seas wash away their foundations, flood the homes, and bring in
debris from the sea.

Last winter heavy storms severely flooded all the homes, destroying 70+, and the fishermen lost
their boats and equipment. WA provided emergency food and blanket packs. This was the only
support 250 families received.

We urgently need to repair and replace the boats and nets to restore these fishermen’s income
and provide winter food packs so these families are more secure this winter.

Below is the route our cyclists will be taking.

We will start cycling together bright and early on Thursday the 8th , heading North along
the Dead Sea-Aqaba road towards Feynan Ecolodge in Dana Reserve. On Friday the 9th we
continue North ending at Mujib Reserve by the Dead Sea area. Our last day is the easiest,
ending early afternoon near the Baptism site from where we head to Madaba (by bus) for a
celebratory dinner that evening! Sunday is a well-deserved day of rest, and everyone heads
back home.

Emergency Child Nutrition Programme in Gaza

The programme was implemented in the middle of this year, when specially designed nutritious meals were prepared by local women’s NGO, Al-Bait Assamed Association Society-Gaza and distributed each day to three kindergartens (KGs): Ashbal Falasteen KG, Al Falah KG, and Al Zahra KG for a four month period. These KGs are in the poorest neighbourhoods of Gaza often facing conflict. The project has been able to improve the nutrition and health of 290 children in these three Kindergartens. Malnutrition and anaemia were effectively tackled over this relatively short period of time. Anaemia amongst the children was reduced by almost 57%. A total of 86 children were found to be anaemic at the beginning of the project. This compares to 37 children at the end of the project.

All measures were taken to ensure the correct foods to improve health were included in the meals. The children underwent medical checks which highlighted their poor health and nutritional needs at the start of the project, a nutritionist then reviewed and amended the meal plan accordingly and at the end of the project the children were tested to again to monitor the level of their health improvement.  Mothers and KG teachers were included in special awareness raising discussion sessions including topics such as health and hygiene, and healthy eating habits and practices.

The local Palestinian women’s NGO who prepared the food took all precautions to ensure the food quality when reaching the children was optimal, including constant cleaning of their premises, secure packaging of the food, and hiring a taxi company to transport the food that had air conditioning in their vehicles!  In the KGs the teachers ensured all tables were cleaned before and after the lunch was served and that children washed their hands before and after lunch.  The improvement in the children’s health and the fact that this project has made a difference and positively impacted these children is very obvious.  This is a project that Welfare Association would very much like to repeat.
